Dear Glover Parents,

This is the last parent letter for the 2018/2019 school year.  I hope it has been a wonderful educational journey for your child this year.  I hope you have a wonderful summer and that you will be back as part of the Glover family in August.

Lost and Found:  The Lost and Found bin is overflowing.  If your child has lost a jacket, coat, hat, book bag, or any other article of clothing please have them check the Lost and Found bin outside of the Cafeteria and LRC.  There are some very nice articles of clothing that your child may be missing.  Feel free to come up and check the bin if your child is missing any clothing articles.

Chromebook Update:  Parents of students in Kindergarten, first, and second grades are invited to come to a Chromebook meeting on Wednesday, May 22nd if you would like your child to be able to take home a Chromebook over the summer.  There is paperwork to complete and a short video to watch.  You may attend to 2:00 or 4:00 PM meeting.  Parents of students in grades three four, and five received a letter last week asking if you would like for your child to keep his/her Chromebook at school for the summer.  If you do not want them to take a Chromebook home for the summer you need to return the form you received last week. You are responsible for any loss or damages of the Chromebooks over the summer.

The Chapel Carnival:  The Chapel will be providing a carnival for the Glover students/families on Thursday, May 23rd from 3:00 – 5:00 PM.  There will be games and refreshments.  They will be passing out information about programs at The Chapel over the summer.  You are cordially invited to attend.

Perfect Attendance Bicycles:  If your child has perfect attendance, he/she brought home the letter last week for their perfect attendance bicycle.  Please sign and return the “Release of Liability” form and return it to the office.  The letter includes instructions for pick-up.

Fifth Grade Recognition Assembly/Graduation:  Fifth grade Recognition Assembly/Graduation will be Wednesday, May 29, 2019 at 9:15 AM in the school cafeteria.  You are cordially invited to attend.  Your child may dress up for the occasion in their “Sunday” best.  Your child will receive all of their awards, their bicycle if they had perfect attendance, and their report card at the ceremony.

Recognition Assembly:  The end-of-the-year Recognition Assemblies will be Thursday, May 30, 2019 for grades Kindergarten through grade four.  The Assembly for Kindergarten and grade 1 will begin at 9:00 AM.  The Assembly for grades two and three will begin at 9:35 AM.  The Assembly for fourth grade will be at 10:10 AM.  Your child will receive all of their awards and their bicycle if they had perfect attendance.

Kindergarten Registration:  It is not too late to register your child for Kindergarten.  We will accept registrations until June 7th.  Registrations will resume on Monday, August 5, 2019.  You can also register at 10 N. Main Street which is the new Akron Public School offices.

Summer School/Pre-Fall:  Students that have been accepted for summer school will be bringing home a letter with their report card letting them know what classroom they will report to for summer school.  Summer school/pre-fall will be held at Glover CLC.  Times will be noted on the letter.  Students attending summer school will enter the building each morning between 8:00 and 8:15 AM through the main doors of the school.  Tables will be marked with room numbers.  Students will proceed to their table as attendance will be taken before the teachers take the students to the classrooms.  Breakfast and lunch will be served with summer school.  If a student arrives after 8:30, he/she must enter through door #1, Main Entrance.  Summer school dates are August 5 – August 16, 2019.  There are still some students that have been invited to pre-fall (summer school) and have not returned their form.  If you do not want your child to attend pre-fall, there is a place to mark No on the form.  The Third Grade Academy begins on June 17th and continues through July 12, 2019.  This is an intensive four-week Reading class to improve Reading skills and give the students another opportunity to complete the MAP Reading and OST Reading tests.

Attendance:  Glover’s attendance for last week was 91.34%.  We need to be at 93% to meet the state requirements on the local report card.  There are 11 students who will be receiving perfect attendance bicycles this year.

Camp Invention:  It is not too late to register to be on the waiting list for Camp Invention which is the week of June 3rd.  This is a hands-on week of Science fun and experiments.  It incorporates the Science state standards and is a fun way to learn about Science.  There are stations the students rotate through each day including building something out of old parts

HABIT 3: PUT FIRST THING FIRST
Work First, Then Play

I spend my time on things that are most important. This means I say “no” to things I know I should not do. I set priorities, make a schedule, and follow my plan. I am disciplined and organized.
You might have noticed that kids will often spend more time complaining and trying to get out of doing something than it would have taken them to just get the work done in the first place. Putting first thing first is a hard concept for kids. This is because we have become a society filled with taking the easy way out, seeking instant gratification, and not looking ahead to how our current decisions will affect our future. However, if we let this idea escape us now, and our children never learn to do the hard things and make the tough decisions while they are young, then we risk them never learning to utilize this habit at all. The point is, while the easy things feel nice for a little, being prepared and having a real sense of accomplishment last alot longer. As it has been said in the past, “Do what you have to do so you can do what you want to do.”
Mastering this habit will take a lot of practice. Have your kid try the following steps whenever possible:
Think about your responsibilities and talk to your parents about why these things are important.
Surprise your parents by doing your chores without being asked.
The next time you have a lot of homework, do the hardest part first.
