Dear Glover Parents,

There is definitely a cool down coming later this week..  Please dress your children for the weather.  We do go outside for recess every day weather permitting.

A safety issue at dismissal has been brought to my attention.  Cars are blocking the STOP sign.  This is causing traffic concerns and issues.  Please do not park in that area.  We need to keep the flow of traffic moving.  I know it is very congested at dismissal and we need to do everything we can to keep the parking lot safe for our students.

Interim Pick-up is this Thursday.  If you are unable to come to Interim pick-up your child’s interim will be mailed home.  If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher.  Interims are such an important piece of your child’s educational journey.  It gives you a chance to meet with the teacher and see how your child is adjusting to the new grade level.  It also let’s you know about your child’s strengths and areas of concern. You can make sure your child is turning in all of the assignments.  Since it is the middle of the grading period there is still time to turn in missing assignments and to raise grades.  Interim Pick-up is from 2:45 - 6:45 PM on Thursday, September 26th.  The Chapel will be serving dinner at 4:00 PM.

School picture day is next  Wednesday, October 2nd  Picture order forms will be sent home TODAY.  Please make a separate envelope for each of your children.  This will help to assure that you get the correct package that you ordered.  We will not be able to make change in the office.  Please make sure that it is taken care of before your child comes to school.  If your child missed getting a picture envelope we have plenty in the office.   Payment is by cash, online with a credit card, or check made out to Lifetouch.  Please make sure each one of your children has his/her own envelope with the correct amount of money.  We do not have change in the office.  Each classroom teacher turns in the picture envelopes for her class.

Family Literacy Night will be held on Thursday, October 3rd from 5:00 - 7:00 PM.  There will be stations, an author, a raffle, a photo opportunity, and dinner served by The Chapel.  There is a reservation slip attached to this letter.  Please fill out if you have not already done so.  It will be a fun evening for our Glover families.  Don’t miss out.

There is NO SCHOOL on Friday, October 4th.  Teachers have a Professional Development Day.

The “Akron After School Program” begins on Monday, October 14th.  The program begins at 2:30 when the children are dismissed and ends at 4:00 PM.  The program is only for selected second and third  grade students to help them prepare for the tests in Reading in December and Reading intervention.  We also ask that you are on time to pick up your child if he/she is not walking home.  Failure to pick up your child on time could result in your child being excused from the program.  Remember that the three strike rule for behavior and on time pick up is being followed.  Students invited to “Akton After School” brought invitations home (pink paper) two weeks ago.  We still have not heard from many of you.  We are re-sending the invitations home again today and they need returned ASAP.

The  week of October 7th is testing week at Glover  for second and fourth grade students for the CogAt7 test.  Please make sure your child gets to sleep on time and eats a good breakfast either at home or at school.  Also, please make sure your child is at school and on time for the testing.  Second and fourth grade students are taking the CogAt-7 test each day next week.

HABIT 3: PUT FIRST THING FIRST
Work First, Then Play

I spend my time on things that are most important. This means I say “no” to things I know I should not do. I set priorities, make a schedule, and follow my plan. I am disciplined and organized.

You might have noticed that kids will often spend more time complaining and trying to get out of doing something than it would have taken them to just get the work done in the first place. Putting first thing first is a hard concept for kids. This is because we have become a society filled with taking the easy way out, seeking instant gratification, and not looking ahead to how our current decisions will affect our future. However, if we let this idea escape us now, and our children never learn to do the hard things and make the tough decisions while they are young, than we risk them never learning to utilize this habit at all. The point is, while the easy things feel nice for a little, being prepared and having a real sense of accomplishment last a lot longer. As it has been said in the past, “Do what you have to do so you can do what you want to do.”
Mastering this habit will take a lot of practice. Have your kid try the following steps whenever possible:

Think about your responsibilities and talk to your parents about why these things are important.
Surprise your parents by doing your chores without being asked.
The next time you have a lot of homework, do the hardest part first.
Remember the importance of having your child at school every day!  Overall attendance at Glover for the week of September 16th was 94.21%.

Your child is bringing home a flyer today to sign up for the “Good News Club” sponsored by The Chapel  If you and your child are interested he/she must return the completed registration flyer.  “Good News Club” will begin on October 3rd and is from 2:30 - 4:00 PM.

Parents, please speak to your child about safety walking to and from school.  Students are running out into the street after school and not crossing at the crosswalk.  I caution the children every day to be safe walking home, to look both ways, and to stay out of the street and people’s yards.
