Dear Glover Parents,

Chilly nights and frosty mornings are telltale signs that winter is close at hand.  We are entering into a beautiful time of year when signs of summer are slowly disappearing and the landscape goes through a wonderful transformation.  We too go through a transformation as we begin to think of and plan for the winter months ahead.

Third Grade Guarantee Meeting:  You are cordially invited to a Third Grade Guarantee meeting on Monday, October 14th  at 8:45 AM or 3:00 PM in the LRC.  This is an informative meeting for parents of students in grade three regarding the third grade guarantee and what that means to you and your child.  It is very important that you attend.  The third grade staff will also be present to answer any questions after the presentation.

Glover T-shirts:  Glover is selling T-shirts with a new Glover “saying”.  The shirts will be gray with blue lettering.  Shirts are $5.00 and should be here before winter break,  Show your Glover spirit and buy a shirt.  Shirts may be worn on Jeans Days and Fridays.

PTA Popcorn Sale:  The PTA is selling delicious popcorn this week for $.50 a bag.  Please dill out the order form and order your popcorn!  You will be glad you did!

Report Cards:  The first grading period closes on Friday, October 25th.  First quarter report cards will be sent home on Wednesday, November 6th.   All students in Kindergarten through fifth grade will receive a report card.  I encourage you to set up an appointment with your child’s teacher if you have any questions about your child’s report card.  Communication between school and home is so important to your child’s educational journey.  The new grading period starts October 28th.  The Glover students got off to a great start this school year.  The students are focused on learning and working hard to achieve their goals. Students in second and fourth grades had testing in October and we are still waiting on their results.

Parent Volunteers:  Glover is always happy to have parent volunteers in the building.  Whether it is a set of helping hands in the classroom or helping out with recess duty, your help is always greatly appreciated.  In order to volunteer in the school, you must have a background check.  Once you have a background check and you want to volunteer, please let me know and I would be happy to get you started.  This is for the safety of your children that you entrust to us every day.

Harvest Festival:  Glover will celebrate Harvest Festival on Thursday, October 31st.  We do not “dress up” for Halloween.

Recognition Assembly:  The Recognition Assembly for the first grading period will be on Friday, November 8th.   You are cordially invited to come and enjoy the Recognition Assembly.  I look forward to seeing you there.  It will be in the morning.  More details and times to follow.

At the beginning of the school year I mentioned that after the first week of school that children could walk by themselves to their classrooms.  This fosters independence and responsibility on the child’s part.  School begins when the students greet the teacher at the classroom door in the morning.  There are routines in place in each classroom so that your child is ready to begin the day.  Please do not walk your child to his/her classroom.  If you need to speak to the teacher, please go to the office.  Your child’s safety is very important to us and we cannot have parents walking through the building before or after school.  Please follow the proper procedures if you need to speak to your child’s teacher.  We want all children to feel safe at Glover and when they see someone in the hallway that shouldn’t be there their anxiety is heightened.  So please, do not walk your child to class and do not walk through the building at the end of the school day.  We have many programs going on and routines and procedures need to be followed by the students as well as the adults
Habit 6: Synergize
Together is better!
Have you ever seen a flock of geese heading south for the winter, flying in a V formation? Scientists have learned some amazing things about why they fly that way. By doing this, the geese are able to fly further than if they were alone, the geese change position as they get tired, and the geese in the back honk to encourage those in the front.
These are some smart birds! By sharing in each other’s draft, taking turns in the lead position, honking for encouragement, and so much more, the geese are able to accomplish more than if each bird flew solo. This is a great example of just how to synergize!!!
In case this is the first time you have ever hear this powerful word, synergy is achieved when 2 or more people work together to create a better solution than either could alone. It’s not your way or my way but a better way, a higher way. Learning to synergize is like learning to form the V formation with others instead of trying to fly through life solo. You’ll be amazed at how much faster and further you’ll go!!!

Try it at home:
Think about someone who irritates you. Ask yourself what you can learn from them?
Share a problem with someone you trust. She if exchanging viewpoints can help you find new and better solutions.
Habit 1: Be Proactive  *  Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind
Habit 3: Put First Thing First * Habit 4: Think Win-Win
Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood
Habit 6: Synergize * Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw

Overall attendance for the week of October 7th is 93.5%.  Please make sure you are making every effort to get your children to school every day.  When he/she is absent, they are missing out on learning.  With HB 410 truancy adds up with hours now and not days.  When your child is late those minutes count.  When you sign out your child this also counts.  Habitual truancy and excessive absence letters have already been generated for some students.

With the start of the new grading period October 28th, let’s make it a goal to have your child arrive at school on time.  If they are eating breakfast at school they need to arrive at 7:50 AM.  If they are not eating breakfast, they do not need to arrive until 8:15 AM.  I had a parent call me one morning last week to tell me that a group of Glover wildcats were fooling around at the bridge and were going to be late for sure.  Sure enough we had a group of students walk in at 8:32 that morning.  Parents, you may need to walk your students to school for a while to make sure they are coming straight to school.  You might be putting them out the door in plenty of time but they are not arriving when they should.

It is so important for you to be involved in your child’s educational journey.  If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.  It is a pleasure to serve you and your children at Glover.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Philomena Vincente
