Dear Glover Parents,

The weather is certainly changing as we move into the weeks of October.  Please make sure your child is dressed for the weather.  Your child should no longer be wearing shorts.  Also, please monitor when your child is arriving at school.  No children should arrive before 7:50 AM as that is the time that breakfast begins.  Students not eating breakfast do not need to arrive until 8:15 AM.  We have many students arriving between 7:20 and 7:50 and wanting to eat breakfast.  Children eating breakfast should arrive at 7:50.

Thank you to everyone who helped make the Glover Family Literacy Night such a success.  The turnout was amazing and everyone had such a great time/  Thank you for supporting your children and Glover!

Please be a cautious driver as you drive through the front parking lot at dismissal.  There are many of our students that are walking through the parking lot because their parents are parked in the parking lot.  Make sure you stop at the crosswalks and let the pedestrians pass.  You will notice orange cones in the driveway in the “No Parking” zones.  There is a bottleneck in the driveway at dismissal because of it.  And students are running across the driveway to get to their cars.  The buses also cannot turn in the driveway if there are cars parked on both sides.  So, please do not park in the “NO PARKING” zone in the driveway or on the crosswalk.

JEANS SAY on Friday, October 11th.  Students may wear jeans by paying a $1.00 on Friday, October 11th.  Jeans can be worn with a Glover Wildcat shirt or the uniform polo shirt.  Students participating in Jeans Day should give their classroom teacher their money.

“Akron After School”—The “Akron After School” program starts October 14th.  If your child was invited they should have brought home an invitation.  I know the office made phone calls to the homes of the students that did not return their form.  The students that received invitations are students that would benefit from extra help in Reading.  Please make sure you are here to pick up your child on time.  The Akron Public Schools Code of Conduct is in effect for the students during the after school program.

NO SCHOOL—There is  NO SCHOOL on Tuesday, November 5th because of an Instructional Improvement Day for teachers and it is  election day,

Dress Code—Please remember to follow the Glover and Akron Public Schools dress code.  Polo shirts can be any SOLID color.  Pants should only be blue, black, or khaki.  We have had some fourth and fifth grade girls wearing the short, short skirts over pants or tights.  The short, short skirts are not permitted.  Also, students may no longer wear shorts until May 1st.  If you have any questions about the school dress code, please contact the office.

Third Grade Guarantee Meeting—Parents of third grade students are cordially invited to a Third Grade Guarantee meeting on Monday, October 14th at 8:45 AM or 2:45 PM in the LRC.  This is an informative meeting for parents of students in grade three regarding the third grade guarantee and what that means to you and your child.  It is very important that you attend.  The third grade staff will also be present to answer any questions after the presentation.

Report Cards—The first grading period ends on Friday, October 25th  First quarter report cards will be sent home on Wednesday, November 6th.  All students in Kindergarten through grade five will receive a report card.  I encourage you to set up an appointment with your child’s teacher if you have any questions about your child’s report card.  Communication between school and home is so important to your child’s education.  We need to work together as your child experiences their educational journey.

Recognition Assembly—The Recognition Assembly for the first grading period will be on Friday, November 8th.    The Recognition Assemblies will be in the morning again this year.  More details to follow. You are cordially invited to come and enjoy the Recognition Assembly.  I look forward to seeing you there.
.
Overall attendance for Glover for the week of September 30th was 93.21%
Let’s see if every classroom can have at least 95% or above for this week!

Hot chips and hot Cheetos are becoming a problem in the lunchroom.  Students are bringing larger bags of hot chips and hot “Cheetos and Takis and passing them out around the lunchroom.  This causes a disturbance in the lunchroom and the students at the table that don’t get any are mad.  Starting today, no more family size snack bags.  If your child is bringing chips or pretzels or Cheetos to school it must be an individual-size bag/package.  And please, no hot chips or hot Cheetos or Takis as the red dye gets on their hands and can get on their clothes or the textbooks or the Chromebook.

Custody Issues—If there are any custody changes with your children, please be sure to inform the office.  We have no way of knowing if you do not tell us.  It is your responsibility to let us know.

If you have not turned in your updated Emergency card it needs to be done ASAP.  We need a working number to contact you if there is an emergency at school.  We need more than one number to contact you.  Also, if your number has been disconnected or your cell phone is out of minutes, please give us another number for contact purposes.  Feel free to come to the office and update your child’s emergency card.  Also, if there is an auto call from the school district regarding school closings you want to be sure you receive the message.  It is very important to have two working numbers on file!

We are receiving too many phone calls at 2:00 or later wanting us to give your child a message as to what they are supposed to do at the end of the school day—go to someone else’s house, go home with someone else, wait in the school office, etc.  It is very hectic at the end of the day in the school office.  Please discuss this with your child in the morning before he/she leaves for school.

Habit 5:
Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood
Listen first, talk second
It’s our tendency to want to swoop out of the sky like Superman and solve everyone else’s problems before we even understand what the problem is. We simply don’t listen! As the American Indian proverb goes, “Listen, or thy tongue will make thee deaf.”
The Key to communication and having power and influence with people can be summed up in one sentence: Seek first to understand, then to be understood. In other words, listen first, talk second. This is Habit 5, and it does work!!! If you can learn this simple habit, a whole new world of understanding will be open up to you.
It has been said, “Before I can walk in anther’s shoes, I must first remove my own.” Seeing things from another’s point of view may seem difficult, but if you are able to do this, most other things will be made that much easier. And just think how much better your relationships will be!
Try this at home:
See how long you can keep eye contact with someone while they are talking to you.
See how well you listen by playing telephone with several friends. Can you relay the message correctly?
Habit 1: Be Proactive  *  Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind
Habit 3: Put First Thing First * Habit 4: Think Win-Win
Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood
Habit 6: Synergize*                  Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw

“Trunk or Treat”—Glover is sponsoring the annual “Trunk or Treat” at Glover.  It is a family night of fun.  Students may dress in costume and receive treats from the different groups in the parking lot.  We had a wonderful response last year and I know it is going to be even better this year.  So mark your calendars and join us on October 31st  from 5:30 – 7:00 PM!
