Glover Students Sell Newspapers, Donate Profits to Project Rise
This year Project Rise was the grateful recipient of The Glover Gazette’s annual newspaper sales. The Glover Gazette is the product of a wonderful team of teachers and volunteers who were able to inspire a talented group of young students to create and sell a school newspaper every month of the school year. They sell these papers for a only 25 cents and this year their goal was to raise $1,000 to donate to a local non profit. By the end of May they had raised $800! The teacher in charge of this fundraiser is Dana Davis. She was helped by Sandy Shoemaker, another teacher at Glover, and Barbara Edwards who has been a volunteer at Glover for over 40 years! On June 4th Dana Davis invited Project Rise staff to come meet the class and accept the donation. Amanda Smith, Special Programming Assistant at Project Rise along with Rachel Gibson, a summer intern from the University of Akron, were able to meet the energetic group of students. Project Rise would like to say a huge thank you to all the students who were a part of the Glover Gazette team this year; Rylynn, Jai'den, Samantha, Je'Lena, Aubrey, Zaviarre, and Suree.
Amanda had this to say after meeting the students, “They were so inspirational. I had asked if they were excited to be on summer break soon and they all responded with a resounding “NO”, all because they wanted to keep working on the newspaper. One of the Gazettes 4th graders said she would Email her teacher over the summer to discuss the newspaper. It was really great to see so much passion from such young students.” Project Rise is excited to see what The Glover Gazette will accomplish next year!
Project Rise is a collaborative effort by Akron Public Schools, local shelters and the Akron community to provide supplemental educational services to children and youth experiencing homelessness.
