Dear Glover Parents,

The weather certainly is playing havoc with the Akron area.  This unseasonably warm weather is very much appreciated and hopefully old man winter does not have more snow in store for us.  Of course there is snow and freezing rain in the forecast for tomorrow.

Please speak to your child about being respectful to each other and to adults.  As you know we are working very hard on the “Seven Habits” to help students be responsible for their actions and to think ahead with the end in mind.  Some of our students are experiencing difficulty taking responsibility for their actions.  Please emphasize the importance of this at home as we continue throughout the remainder of the school year.

“Good News Club”—“Good News Club” begins next Wednesday, February 27th.  “Good News Club” is for students in third, fourth, and fifth grade.  If you have a student in third, fourth, or fifth grade he/she will be bringing home a permission slip this week.  Parents are responsible for pick-up at 4:00 PM unless your child walks home from school.

“Akron After School”—“Akron After School” will begin on Monday, February 25th.  Thank you to all of the parents that have returned the invitation.  I will send home another copy TODAY for those students that have not returned their invitation.  This is “extra” Reading intervention for second and third grade students.

Kindergarten Registration—Kindergarten registration has begun.  If you have a child that will be 5 years old by September 30, 2019 it is time to register him/her for Kindergarten.  Kindergarten registration is from 9:00 AM until 11:00 and 1:00 until 3:00 PM.  You will need to bring the following documents with you at the time of registration:

Birth Certificate
Social Security Card
Immunization Record
Proof of Residence
Custody Papers (if there has been a divorce or separation)

School Pictures—THE DATE OF SPRING PICTURES is Wednesday, MARCH 13th.  It is pre-pay like it was in the fall.  Only students purchasing packets of pictures may dress in their “Sunday best”.  In the Spring Lifetouch only takes pictures of the students that pay for packets of pictures.

Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind
Have a Plan
When you begin with the end in mind, you are looking ahead at the future and creating a pathway to get there. Thinking beyond today can really be quite exciting and it can help you take charge of your life. Why is it so important to have an end in mind? There are two good reasons. The first is that when you are at a critical crossroads in your life, the path you choose will affect you forever. The second is that if you do not decide your own future, someone else will do it for you!
The choices you make could impact the rest of your life. Although you may be young, free, and have your whole life ahead of you…each decision has a consequence and each day puts you one step closer towards your future. Think of life like an eighty-foot rope stretched out before you. Each foot represents one year of your life. Even though you have a long ways left to go, where you are now has been affected by where you started and will continue to impact where you end up.
Practice at home:
Lay out your clothes for tomorrow before you go to bed.
Write down your goal and put it in a safe place where you can see it each day.
Think about what you want to be when you grow up. Then share it with someone who can help you learn more about it.

Habit 1: Be Proactive  *  Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind
Habit 3: Put First Thing First * Habit 4: Think Win-Win
Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood
Habit 6: Synergize * Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw

Our overall attendance for the week of February 11, 2019 was 92.4%.  That is getting better!!  Getting closer to 95%!
To meet the attendance benchmark on the state report card, Glover’s attendance must be at least 93%.  We all need to do our part to have our students in school every day.

Ohio State Testing—This is time of year when we turn up the rigor to get the students more prepared for the Ohio State tests.  We are getting the students familiar with the format and kinds of questions on the test.  This week’s Ohio State Test vocabulary words are:

Evaluate—Appraise, judge the quality, importance or worth of something

Examine—Look at closely and carefully

Explain—To make plain or understandable; to give the reason for or cause of

Explore—Examine, go over carefully

Spring Break--Spring break for the Akron Public Schools begins on Friday, April 19th and ends on Friday, April 26.  Classes resume on MONDAY, April 29th.

Dress Code—Please check what your child is wearing before he/she leaves the house in the morning.  Students are coming to school out of uniform.  Remember, the APS dress code is any solid-colored polo shirt or blouse with a collar and khaki, blue, or black pants.  Many of the older young ladies are coming in light colored jeans thinking they are uniform pants.   Students are telling the office staff that they had no clean clothes.  When we call home we find out that is not the case.  We ask for your help in getting everyone back on track.  We only wear the Glover T-shirt on Fridays.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.  We are all part of your child’s educational journey and we want it to be a positive and successful one.
